CE AAA vs Level 1 and Level 2 Armor: How to Read Motorcycle Suit Safety Ratings

A motorcycle suit can carry a CE Class AAA rating and still use Level 1 impact protectors. Another garment may be Class AA but come with Level 2 armor. Both descriptions can be accurate because they measure different parts of the protective system.

That distinction matters when shopping for riding gear. AAA, AA and A are garment classifications under the EN 17092 series, while Level 1 and Level 2 describe the performance of impact protectors under standards in the EN 1621 series. One rating cannot be used as a substitute for the other.

For riders comparing CE-rated motorcycle racing suits, the useful question is therefore not simply "Is this suit CE rated?" It is "What is the garment class, what armor is installed, which standard applies to each protector, and does everything fit correctly?"

CE AAA and Armor Levels Measure Different Things

Think of a motorcycle suit as two protective systems working together.

The first is the garment structure. This includes the leather or textile shell, seams, fasteners, construction, abrasion zones and the ability of the garment to remain intact during a slide. EN 17092 classifies motorcycle garments as AAA, AA, A, B or C, with AAA carrying the highest requirements among the main full-garment classes.

The second is impact protection. Shoulder, elbow, knee, hip and back protectors are separate components designed to reduce the force transmitted to the body during an impact. These protectors are assessed under standards in the EN 1621 family and can receive Level 1 or Level 2 ratings.

SATRA's EN 17092 overview explains that the standard covers jackets, trousers and one-piece or two-piece suits, with testing that includes impact abrasion, tear strength, seam performance, protector positioning, ergonomics and garment integrity.

This is why seeing "CE Level 2" in a product description does not tell you whether the suit itself is AAA, AA or A. Likewise, seeing "AAA" does not tell you that every protector inside the garment is Level 2.

What Does CE Class AAA Actually Mean?

Class AAA is defined by EN 17092-2:2020 and represents the highest garment class within the EN 17092 series for motorcycle protective clothing. The standard applies to motorcycle garments intended for on-road use and evaluates more than the thickness of the outer material.

A garment has to function as a protective assembly. Relevant testing includes abrasion resistance, tear resistance, seam and structural strength, closure security and ergonomics.

This is important because a suit can use strong leather but still perform poorly if critical seams fail or panels separate during a crash. Material strength alone does not determine the garment class.

EN 17092 also considers different areas of the body according to expected risk. Areas more likely to experience severe abrasion receive more demanding requirements than lower-risk zones.

Class AAA and AA garments are also required to incorporate EN 1621 impact protectors at key limb locations. SATRA identifies shoulder, elbow, knee and hip protection among the mandatory positions for these classes. Back and chest protection should still be checked separately rather than assumed from the AAA marking.

There are also less obvious construction tests. For example, SATRA describes a two-piece suit connection test in which a force of 100 N is applied for 60 seconds to check whether the joined garments gap or separate. Sleeve restraint systems are subjected to 50 N for 30 seconds. These requirements illustrate why garment certification involves much more than an abrasion-resistant material claim.

One point deserves particular caution: AAA should not be interpreted as a guaranteed safe crash speed. Laboratory abrasion conditions provide standardized comparisons between garments. They cannot reproduce every combination of road surface, tumbling, impact angle, rider mass, obstacles and accident dynamics encountered in a real crash.

What Do Level 1 and Level 2 Motorcycle Armor Mean?

Level 1 and Level 2 refer to how well an impact protector limits the force transmitted through it during standardized testing.

The principle is simple: lower transmitted force means better impact attenuation under the test conditions.

Shoulder, elbow, knee and hip protectors are generally tested under EN 1621-1:2012. Back protectors use EN 1621-2:2014. Chest and inflatable protection systems have additional parts of the EN 1621 series.

SATRA's EN 1621 protector guidance confirms that the standards distinguish two performance levels and that Level 2 provides the higher level of impact protection.

For limb protectors under EN 1621-1, commonly referenced limits are:

  • Level 1: overall mean transmitted force must not exceed 35 kN, with applicable individual-impact limits.

  • Level 2: overall mean transmitted force must not exceed 20 kN, again with stricter individual-impact limits.

The difference is substantial. Comparing the mean thresholds, Level 2 allows about 43 percent less transmitted force than the Level 1 limit for EN 1621-1 limb protection.

Back protection uses different thresholds. Under EN 1621-2, Level 1 back protection has a mean transmitted-force limit of 18 kN, while Level 2 reduces that mean limit to 9 kN. The corresponding individual-impact limits are 24 kN and 12 kN.

That does not mean a Level 2 protector can prevent every fracture or internal injury. Certification tells you how the protector performed in a defined laboratory test, not the outcome of every possible motorcycle crash.

Does a Class AAA Suit Automatically Have Level 2 Armor?

No. This is one of the easiest motorcycle safety labels to misread.

AAA describes the garment's certification class. Level 2 describes the impact protector's performance.

A manufacturer can therefore use different certified protector levels while the surrounding garment meets its own EN 17092 requirements. Real products on the market demonstrate this clearly, including AAA-certified garments supplied with Level 1 protection in some locations and higher-level protection in others.

For the buyer, this means the following descriptions are not equivalent:

  • "CE AAA certified"

  • "CE Level 2 armor"

  • "CE certified protectors"

  • "EN 1621-1 Level 2"

  • "EN 1621-2 Level 2"

Each statement needs context.

A suit advertised simply as "CE certified" gives you much less useful information than one that specifies EN 17092-2:2020 Class AAA and identifies the applicable EN 1621 standard and level for each protector.

How to Read a Motorcycle Suit's CE Labels

Do not rely only on the sales-page headline. Check the garment label, product documentation and individual protector markings where possible.

Start with these five questions.

1. What EN 17092 class does the complete suit have?

For maximum garment performance within this classification system, look for Class AAA. AA may provide an appropriate balance for many road-riding applications, while A typically accepts lower protection requirements in exchange for greater comfort or reduced ergonomic penalties.

2. Which impact protectors are actually included?

Check shoulders, elbows, knees and hips individually. Then determine whether a back protector and chest protection are included, optional or absent.

A "back protector pocket" is not the same thing as a certified back protector.

3. Is each protector Level 1 or Level 2?

Look for EN 1621-1 on limb protectors and EN 1621-2 on a back protector. If reducing transmitted impact force is a priority, Level 2 offers the higher test performance.

4. What area does the protector cover?

The number is not the whole story. Protector dimensions and correct positioning affect how much of the intended body area remains covered when the rider moves.

A large Level 2 protector that moves away from the joint because the garment fits poorly may not deliver the practical advantage suggested by its laboratory rating.

5. Does the suit remain properly positioned in a riding posture?

Test the suit while sitting in a realistic motorcycle position. Bend the elbows and knees, reach forward and move through the range required on the bike.

The knee armor should remain over the knee. Elbow and shoulder protection should not rotate substantially away from their intended positions. A racing suit may feel noticeably different standing upright because its pattern is designed around a riding posture.

AAA With Level 1 or AA With Level 2: Which Is Better?

There is no single rating that combines garment abrasion performance and impact attenuation into one universal score.

If the comparison is strictly about the garment structure, AAA has the higher EN 17092 classification.

If the comparison is strictly about an impact protector, Level 2 has the higher performance level.

That means an AAA suit with Level 1 armor and an AA garment with Level 2 armor each have a different advantage. The AAA garment has met the more demanding garment-class requirements, while the Level 2 protectors in the AA garment allow less transmitted force under their relevant impact tests.

For sport riding or track use, many riders will reasonably seek both: a high garment classification and higher-performing impact protection where suitable.

Comfort still matters. Level 2 protectors have historically carried potential penalties in thickness, weight or restriction, although modern flexible protector materials have reduced those compromises considerably. A protector that is so uncomfortable that the rider removes it provides no protection at all.

Track riders should also check the rules of the specific circuit, organizer or racing series. An EN 17092 rating alone does not automatically prove compliance with every track or competition requirement.

Fit and Coverage Matter as Much as the Label

Certification should narrow your choices, not replace a proper fitting assessment.

A racing suit works by keeping abrasion-resistant material and impact protectors in the correct places while the rider slides, tumbles or strikes the road. Excessive looseness can allow armor to shift. An excessively tight suit can restrict movement and may place abnormal stress on closures or stretch panels.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Shoulder and elbow protector position

  • Knee and hip coverage

  • Sleeve and leg length in the riding position

  • Cuff and ankle security

  • Main zipper and closure construction

  • Connection integrity on a two-piece suit

  • Space for a separate back or chest protector

  • Compatibility with an airbag system, where one is used

  • Freedom of movement without large areas of loose material

Fit also explains why buying only by chest or waist measurement can be misleading. Two riders with similar measurements may have different torso lengths, shoulder widths or limb proportions. The safest choice is a suit whose protective components remain correctly positioned on the actual rider.

A Practical Way to Choose Between Motorcycle Suit Safety Ratings

Read motorcycle safety certification as a set of separate pieces rather than searching for one impressive label.

For the garment itself, identify the EN 17092 class. For shoulders, elbows, knees and hips, identify the EN 1621-1 level. Check the back protector separately under EN 1621-2, and confirm whether it is supplied with the suit or must be purchased separately.

For a rider prioritizing maximum protection, the strongest starting point is generally a properly fitted garment with a high EN 17092 class, Level 2 protection at important impact zones where practical, adequate back protection, secure closures and armor that stays correctly positioned.

Most importantly, compare complete specifications rather than marketing phrases. AAA and Level 2 are not competing ratings. They describe different jobs. A well-chosen motorcycle suit combines strong garment construction, suitable impact protection, adequate coverage and a fit that allows all of those components to work where they are supposed to.
